Apple's list of necessary System Fonts (and the location where they should
be) is at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301332. Oddly, it
does not include Verdana. LOTS of things will behave incorrectly if you have
removed any of these. Most of the Asian ones, you can disable, but should
not remove.

You might also want to read
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607630
Which says you MUST have the following English fonts:
  Courier.dfont
  Geneva.dfont
  Helvetica.dfont
  Keyboard.dfont
  LastResort.dfont
  LucidaGrande.dfont
  Monaco.dfon
And that Office for Mac installs/uses/needs the following:
  Arial
  Arial Black
  Comic Sans MS
  Tahoma
  Trebuchet MS
  Verdana
  Webdings
There is a LOT of information about font management in OS X on this page!

Microsoft discusses fonts Office 2004 installs at:
    http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Disable-Fonts.html
And gives a full list of all 77 of them at:
    http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Disable-Fonts.html#appendix
The first of these two pages also discusses font management in OS X.

And, if you need more information, there are a couple of great little Take
Control eBook on Font Management in OS X for $10, both by Sharon Zardetto
Aker:
Take Control of Fonts in Mac OS X
    http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/fonts-macosx.html
Take Control of Font Problems in Mac OS X
    http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/font-problems-macosx.html

If you get the shareware program Pacifist ($20), it will let you open your
install CDs to see a list of what's actually on them, instead of just seeing
the installers. You can then drag the individual fonts, or the entire fonts
folder, off, onto your desktop and from there, reinstall the fonts. I am
guessing that some of the ones you need installed with Office. This can be
VERY useful at times like this.
