I would think that this would cause it. You have asked Entourage to suddenly get rid of 60 days' worth of extra messages from out of two folders. You have to give it time to do that -- it could be a couple hundred, or couple thousand, messages. The "logout has timed out" message happens if there's something going on and you can't log out within the 2 minutes or so that it gives you. When the Entourage purge is done, you can try again. You shouldn't have to keep Force Quit-ting Entourage. Let the purge complete, then quit Entourage normally before initiating the Log Out procedure.
