I use sounds to notify me about important mail. Some of my sounds are system sounds. Others announce category. I can hear these sounds even if I¹m in another room alerting me to mail that I deem important. You can even create your own sounds or use computer voices to announce your mail. For example, you could have the AppleScript say ³Mail from Dad².
