Many ISPs block direct access to other mail servers and require that
outgoing mail go out via their own mail servers. Without knowing what your
normal settings are and what ISP you're connecting through when traveling,
it is impossible for us to tell you what changes to make although usually
just changing the outgoing mail server to the ISPs outgoing server will do
it.

On the other hand, if there is no blocking, your ISP almost certainly will
not accept mail from outside their network for delivery outside their
network unless it is authenticated. To do otherwise makes then an "open
relay" which will get them spam-blocked by many, many other ISPs.

I've seen an number of problems when traveling. Some ISPs silently redirect
connections to their servers. Your mail goes out normally if you're doing
unauthenticated and unencrypted sends but otherwise fails.

Some particularly brain-dead ISPs insist that the sender be a an account of
theirs. No sending mail with the sender being on another ISP.

If your ISP supports sending mail via the submission port (587), that is
another solution. By default, mail is sent via the SMTP port (25) and when
their is outgoing mail blocking, it's usually on port 25. As port 587 should
(by standards) always require an authenticated connection, I know of no ISPs
blocking port 587. But not all ISPs accept mail on the submission port. To
use port 587, you need to select it under Advance Sending Options in your
account setup.
