This is probably due to your Junk Email Protection settings.  It does this
to prevent images being automatically downloaded from Spam messages.  If you
have addresses you know are not from spammers you can add them to the Safe
Domains list (Tools-->Junk E-mail Protection...-->Safe Domains).  You just
add the domain you want to mark as safe and any messages that come from
those domains will automatically load any images.  Likewise I think if you
just want specific people you can just add individuals to your address book
and they will never get treated as Junk E-mail and have the images always
load automatically.
