Just to finalise this. I now have the search speed fixed by going into
options and selecting Use simple search filter.

Ah, good! You might want to lower your search limit to something like 100
instead of the default 1000. That may speed things a bit with larger
lookups.

That does explain things. I'm still stuck in the mindset of Notes on Novell
and never think about it on Windows.
