Reinstalling rarely fixes problems like this. Office 2008 has been so problematic for many users, I advise zipping the current copy if you do decide to reinstall so you will have fall back. I would test in a new User and a new Identity to help narrow down the source of the problem.
Just to be clear... Sounds were broken in the original release DVD version 12.0.0. This was fixed in later updates. Other sound fixes: First check Entourage --> Preferences "Notification". Make sure that the appropriate sounds are checked. Click the speaker icon next to them to test your sound setup .If you can hear sounds from other applications, but not the Entourage sounds have a look at this Apple Knowledge Base article.
