I had a similar problem recently with a POTS connection through my POTS
("plain old telephone service") modem on a MacBook Pro to an Earthlink
Dialup. Here are some things to look for, which will require your obtaining
information from the host (CompuServe, I think you said).

1) In the old Mac days, back in System 7, most of our connections to the
Internet were through a modem connected to a telephone line. Before the Mac
handled the connections automatically in the Remote Access Control Panel, we
used dialup scripts, such as PPP dialup scripts, plus another software for
"the dialer." I think I used a program called FreePPP or ConfigPPP to
handle the dialup, and had to write a script, which was executed by FreePPP.

The Mac OS's Remote Access Control Panel eventually handled the connection.
For a while, we had to tell the Mac OS to use that script. Then the OS had
scripts built-in. Later, it "just worked."

See here for Remote Access setup:

2) Recently I had to connect to Earthlink by POTS dialup, using my MacBook
Pro with OS 10.4.11 and Apple's USB modem. I had not use that connection
for over six months. I had the last working configuration stored in OS
10.4.11. Although the Mac's "dialup connection window" (whatever it is
really called) showed that the modem reach Earthlink, "authentication
failed."

In the old days, Earthlink had required a sign-on in the format:
    username

Then,
    username/ELN

Then,
    ELN/username

Then,
    [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Then,
    username

...So you will need to contact CompuServe (if they still exist, which seems
doubtful) and see what they require for the dial-in authentication. Your
problem might be as simple as needing to reconfigure the way you present the
Username at authentication.

In the meantime, it seems that you could get your CompuServe email through a
webmail connection here:

You might also post a query at the Claris Emailer mailing list. (Yes, there
are some folks who are still using Claris Emailer -- the early ancestor of
Microsoft Entourage -- in both OS 9 and OS X.)

There is one fellow there who is a guru of all this stuff. He might be able
to help you debug this. I am sending him a BC of this email. If you can't
get through on the Claris Emailer list, send me your query, and I'll forward
to him.

Hope this helps.

Roger.
