Russ,

Thanks for the input. I would be very interested in follwoing the growth
of pines with such long internodes. A 5-foot internode is truly amazing. I
wonder how a tree with such extraordinary fast growth holds up over the years.

Bob:

I have personally measured individual white pines in WV with internodes that
were substantially more than 50 inches and the longest I have measured has been
more than 60".

FYI....just to the west of the Taconic Range in New York State there is a small
town called Cherry Plain. The area around Cherry Plain used to have a couple
of very large green house operations that specialized in roses but the thing
that sticks with me the most is the white pine in that area.

During the 70s when I was working for Alan Page and Green Diamond Forestry
Service we did a lot of work in the Cherry Plain area and Alan always brought
up the phenomenal height growth and internodes in the white pine which were
consistently 4' or more. It always amazed me how you could actually count the
internodes from up to half a mile away because they were so wide....and the
area had no weevil. The second best place I ever saw for white pine in that
portion of the country was in the West Wardsboro, Vermont area.

The funny thing about white pine is finding long internodal growth in one area
and go into the woods a few miles away and encounter 6 to 10" internodes.

I think almost anything is possible in the absence of white pine weevils.

Russ
