James:
 
The fern is Ebony spleenwort (Asplenium platyneuron); looks like a small 
Christmas fern but a different species for sure. Just "google" the name and 
you'll get lots more info. Very common through a variety of moist forest 
habitats.

Check out this picture of a fern I photographed on a nurse log at Congaree 
National Park. Can anyone ID it?
