Here in the NJ Pine Barrens we have a fern called Ebony Spleenwort, which grows 
only in areas where the soil has been sweetened by decaying ruins or other 
man-made structures. Your fern, to me, looks just like it.

Check out this picture of a fern I photographed on a nurse log at Congaree 
National Park. Can anyone ID it?
