Steve,

When I was there in October last year, I only had time to measure some of
the more frequented areas on the west side of the gorge. My wife & I drove
a good bit on the very lightly travelled east side of the gorge to see if
any decent tree areas could be viewed from the road. We didn't have time to
get out. There seemed possibilities as we proceeded further downstream,
then the road got pretty tight and non paved, and we decided to turn
around.

Letchworth is a huge area, and my numbers are really just a starting point
for future Ents' trips to the area. Although the great majority of
Letchworth appears to be logged, there are patches of old growth, as well as
many areas that probably haven't seen logging in close to 150 years. The
time frame between past logging periods and the steepness and secluded
nature of many of the side ravines, lends me to believe that we've only
scratched the surface at Letchworth.

In future trips, and who knows when that next opportunity may come, I'd like
to explore the Great Bend bottom areas and associated ravines from the east
side.

Letchworth is an incredibly majestic place, and a definite "must visit" spot
for any Ents going through or planning on staying in western NY/Corning NY
area.
