Mike, Your forest description makes me so homesick - I'm from Maine. That pic of the 2 trunks fused together was incredible. Are those balsam firs able reach the canopy in a eastern white pine/spruce forest? I always think of them as small trees that sneak into any openings, but I really don't know what I'm talking about!
Growing up we had this wacko white pine in our front yard. It looked like a candelabra because of all the big branches bending up to the sky. The best tree to climb for a kid! I'll have to get a pic and take a stab at measurements. It's such a fat old thing! Thanks again for sharing all this.
