Second, and this comes under the gadget category, how many ENTS members have an iPhone? If I'm not the only one, those that do have one may be interested in one of the Apps (Applications) that can be found in Apples App store...it's called Clinometer. Clinometer is what a good ENT would hope it would be...a full faced clinometer that uses a trio of internal accelerometers, in this application to functionally mimmic a clinometer...I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that with some tweaking, it could be as accurate as the Suunto. And can be easily read in a dark forest setting that we occasionally find ourselves in. The intent is to calculate the lenght of a trunk or limb as a parabola. The drawing in the Diagram worksheet shows the basic setup. Three measurements are shown, but up to 10 can be take. If the two worksheets look intimidating, remember that all that is required is to enter the raw measurements (distances and angles) in the Diagram worksheet and then click on the Regression worksheet to see the results. The red cells have the answers - the arc length and slope length for comparison purposes from the initial to final point.
