Jenny:

Looks like wind damage, possibly from a derecho (straightline wind).  We 
have derechos with hurricane force winds every summer and lots of trees 
that look like that in MN. The branch on the right side of the first 
picture survived because it was on the downwind side, and later produced 
a bunch of epicormic sprouts that grew straight upwards, while the site 
of the main break later started to rot.  Unlike most European lindens, 
this one has character.
