The deer are over-populated and sickly.  There is a high mortality over winter 
with no natural predators.  Would you rather they starve to death over winter?  
Or die of disease?  It is not a lack of respect for the wildlife, but an 
attempt to keep things in balance.  The Game Commission needs to stop programs 
that create enclaves that increase deer populations when the forest can't 
support the current population.  There are more deer in the state than there 
ever have been.  I don't hunt, but I see it as a useful wildlife management 
tool.  So you choose, starve to death over winter, or use hunting to reduce the 
populations to sustainable levels.  There isn't any third option.
