Barry,

You are right common names do vary from place to place.  (If I remember right,
you refer to Platanus occidentalis as botton tree where I refer to it as
sycamore).  I looked up Q. prinoides up in my copy of Oaks of North America
Howard Miller & Samuel LAmb and it gave the common names of dwarf chinkapin and
dwarf chestnut.  I guess that is the reason for the scientific names.

Hi Beth,
Since it is a species I'm familiar with, I have to say, Dwarf Chestnut Oak IS
Quercus prinoides. It's listed that way in our Pine Barrens field guide, and by
all naturalists I know here. The common name Dwarf Chinquapin Oak is new to me.
Common names for the same plant or tree vary from place to place. But I'm sure
you know that.
Attached is a photo of one I found a few weeks back. They are uncommon here,
but can be found from time to time.
Thanks,
Barry

Doug,

Considering that the second photo there is a sign attached to the tree stating
that is a Dwarf Chinquapin Oak (Quercus prinoides) and that there isn't a dwarf
chestnut oak that I am aware of my guess would be Q. prinnoides.

Barry, ENTS,

a couple weekends ago I went to the Arnold Arboretum with my wife, Ellen.
Naturally I just had to measure their nice dwarf chinquapin oak or dwarf
chestnut oak.
