If I remember my National Geographic article from 1956 correctly, it said that 
tree was found to be 6000 years old. But I would need to check for sure. I 
could be wrong on that. My first response was that it was the worst idea anyone 
ever came up with, and the fact that he actually went ahead with it was 
shocking to me. I will have to read the article (which I forgot about after I 
posted my first response).

I passed this article on because of the story of Donald Curry.  He has always 
been vilified for his role cutting a bristlecone pine, the Prometius 
tree, which upon ring counting turned out to be the oldest living thing known 
on Earth at around 4900 years.  This article gives another side of the story.  
He had a long and productive career before his death in 2004. You each can 
decide about whether the vilification was justified or not, but either way this 
is a fascinating account.
