George,

I appreciate your posts in MD- my home state. Maryland has lots to offer and
I'm glad ENTS is getting some time in there. I'll be up sometime this winter
and hope to visit Belt Woods and some of the nice older trees along the C&O
Canal.

Subject: [ENTS] Pokomoke River State Forest, Maryland

ENTS,

While vacationing in Maryland this past summer,8/18/09, my family and I
decided to take a morning hike along the Trail of Change which is located in
the Shad Landing Area of Pokomoke River State Park. The forest surrounding
the trail is in several stages of succession, which is how it got it's name,
due to manmade disturbances. Shad Landing has one of the northern most
natural stands of bald cypress, some of it is said to be old growth. Water
oak is another southern tree that can be seen growing along this trail. Our
hike was cut short due to the relentless attack from the mosquitoes and
flies. The bug repellent did little to stop their harassment. I did manage
to take some photos and measurements.

The trail cuts through two large thickets of mountain laurel. They are the
largest I've ever seen and I could easily walk under them without ducking
and weaving. I was most impressed with the mountain laurel. I only
measured the fattest one along the trail but there are taller ones within
the thickets.

Here are the numbers for the few trees I did measure.
