The fine looking Catskill birches make me wonder if there needs to be yet another rating system independent of height and CBH quantification that takes into account such qualities as: Character (overall feel of the tree, sum of all of it's characteristics) Gnarl (cool limb twists and turns, windows/limb unions, reiterations, crazy exposed root structure, etc, etc,) Crown quality (majestic or otherwise interesting or impressive total crown structure) Magnitude (the visceral response rating, inspirational kick factor, wow value) Spirit of the forest rating (how well the tree invokes the intrinsic qualities of a mature diverse and healthy forest)
Of course we'd have a heck of a time coming up with this proposed system since there are subjective components that render a rangerfinder and clinometer useless :-) If you crossed referenced the best of a list based on the above values with maximum height and CBH lists you might end up with the ultimate great tree list. -Andrew [email protected] wrote: > Don, > > I thank you and the Catskills thank you.
