Don:

Its inevitable that winter will arrive, no matter how late. We will 
probably have our first day with a high below freezing this week, and 
temperatures in northern MN are predicted to fall well below freezing, 
so that the lakes will have ice in about two weeks. But this will be the 
first time for the sled dog operators that I know, that sled dog 
vacations in the Boundary Waters wilderness will not begin by December 1st.

During El Nino winters the arctic air from Alaska often loses it punch 
before reaching Minnesota--they aren't predicting anything like you 
describe here any time soon, and our mean temperatures in winter are 
slightly colder than yours in Anchorage.
