I think cameras have always been against the rules on the subways, I think it's a privacy issue for subway riders. However photographers have been sneaking subway photos for as long as there have been subways :-)
You've probably heard towhees many times in Maine. I first heard towhees when I was a kid but never knew what they were until many years later. They're often in scrub habitat on hill tops and spend most of their time on the ground kicking leaves around so, they're more often heard than seen. The females are even more seldom seen, they possess lovely subtle plumage and blend in well. Typical call is their namesake: tow-whee!!! (sharp call, emphasis on the second syllable). During the breeding season the males will perch up on what passes for a tree, usually a wind stunted chestnut oak or pitch pine in my area, and call "Drink your tea". A very pleasant suggestion when you're out in the woods.
