That makes sense. I have been to both places and I think large trees would
be in short supply, so I was just wondering. The website is quite right;
these places are like sleepy little towns. I have a good friend who lives
in Broad Channel. He is the Jamaica Baykeeper. Before he retired, he was
for years the chief of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Preserve. I didn¹t know
that they had volunteer fire depts. That¹s interesting. I wonder how the
unionized fire dept. feels about that. If you go to City Island, which is
like a tiny fishing village, then you must also go to Pelham Bay Park to the
section called Hunters Island. It is not really an island any more because
of landfilling activities around the time of the creation of Orchard Beach.
But there are big trees there, maybe even considered old growth. There is a
big red oak tree that the Parks Dept named Big Red. That grove is
wonderful.

Because, although they are part of New York City, they are both actually
small, relatively remote communities, like small towns. Each has a main
street with a volunteer fire house. I find that very interesting for being
within NYC. I read a lot, and I probably found out about them from reading
the "You'd never believe you're in NYC" section of the Forgotten-ny website,
one of my favorite websites on the entire internet. I'm endlessly fascinated
by NYC.
