Larry,
I only recently discovered that we have Shortleaf Pine here. I used to think 
that 100% of the pine trees in the Pine Barrens were Pitch Pine. But then I 
found out that we also have Shortleaf Pine here. They resemble each other, but 
of course the shortleaf has shorter needles and smaller cones. There's also a 
difference in the bark, as far as I know.
