Well, today proved disappointing. I could not verify the height
I had previouly gotten for the tuliptree on Montpelier. I couldn't
even come close. I measured and remeasured. Nancy Weiss accompanied
me. She had a Prostaff 550. We got similar distances on all the trees
we measured.
Basically, the best I could do was 161.2 feet for the tree I
thought I measured yesterday. However, I got 14.8 feet in girth for
the tree. I had listed the girth as 13.7 feet on Sunday. I measured
the tree adjacent to the one just mentioned to 159.1 feet. I presume
it was the one I measured yesterday to 158.8 feet. It's girth is 14.0
feet. Nothing matches and there aren't any other candidates in the
spot I thought was the right one. Man, what was I on yesterday?
On a positive note, We measured a new tree to 161.1 feet. Time
was running out so I didn't go down and get it's girth. The new tree
makes the 3rd over 160 I've measured on the site.
Unfortunately, time was limited. So I didn't get accomplished
what needed to be done. I had to be in Charlottesville to measure a
tree for a heritage tree committee. It is a green ash as best I can
tell. It's dimensions are: CBH = 15.4 ft, Height = 95.0 feet, Spread =
75 feet. The tree stahnds next to a museum. I measured the tree using
the tangent method and got 111.8 feet.
I'm thinking about returning tomorrow for a 3rd time to
Montpelier. The third time is a charm.
