Did a quick drive along the road that sits just to the south and above the area. I know the hemlocks have been decimated here (and already long ago) for the most part, but I noticed that the steep slopes rising above the gorge appeared to have some sizable hardwoods. Might be another area worth checking out. Undoubtably at least 150 years old and maybe considerably more I'd imagine judging from the claims about the former hemlock forest below the steeps.
