CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS -- FALL ISSUE OF RHIZOME

Reaching Out: Communities, Environments and the Academy

The recent proposal for ESAC to create a Union of Concerned Environmental
Scholars (put forward by Cate Sandilands at the 1999 AGM) raises several
interesting questions about the relationship between environmental studies
as an academic discipline and broader communities of environmental
activists, policy advocates, concerned citizens, marginalized communities
etc. How can we, as scholars, address environmental issues? How can we
contribute to community-based activism? What kind of projects can
environmental scholars pursue? Are there viable ways to practice
environmental studies?

Rhizome, the newsletter of the Environmental Studies Association of
Canada, is therefore seeking submissions (articles, opinion pieces, short
essays, and book reviews) related to the broad theme of Reaching Out:
Communities, Environments and the Academy. Short articles, opinion pieces
and project reports (500-2,500 words max.) may cover such topic areas as:

- specific projects (restoration, community partnerships, popular
education, etc.)
- academic and activist links
- language, accessibility and academic discourse -- who (or where) is our
audience?
- Research and activism: is there a boundary?
- linking policy research with policy advocates
- community empowerment / disempowerment and advocacy research
- any other

Deadline: September 15, 1999

ALSO: Letters to the editor on issues pertaining to the last issue of
Rhizome (the relationship between theory and environmental studies) are
also welcome for our new Discussion section.
