It's a micro USM motor, not the ring type and it's the ONLY Lens that
offers FTM with a micro USM motor. All others use ring-type USM drives.

Exactly my feelings too. The gritty feel comes from the gear needed by
the micro USM. Ring-type USM does not need a gear but drives the FTM
mechanism directly.

Same here. I've seen no ill effects from mine. Superb pictures and AF
sure is OK.
