Well, I am not so sure about that. It seems that for
low-end consumer market many manufacturers have no
plans to go over 3 megapixels at that time. They
prefere to add more features then increasing the pixel
number. Why? Because most people just want 4x6 prints
and 3 MPixel is enough for that. When they actually
want some bigger enlargments they usualy do not have
the high requirements that more serious or
professional photographers have. They go more 'wow'
about the big print from their son/daugther then about
incredible details.
What about photographers who want higher quality,
higher resolution, etc. For some time the cameras will
get to the same point where we are for cheap consumer
cameras now. But for now they will have to bite the
bullet and always upgrade to the best that comes out.
D30/D2000->D1v->... Or for the next few years they can
just shoot slides and scan them. This is about the
only market where I don't see digital cameras that
much yet.
With all these discussions we should not forget that
digital cameras and 'analog' cameras most often have
different applications. Look at MF. Just because many
people use scanbacks for their MF cameras did not make
the 'analog' MF cameras disapear and will not for a
long time. The same is true for 35mm. So to whom would
I suggest to buy a D30 or the coming(?) D1v? Not to
pros where quality and resolution is the biggest
concern but to techies with too much money, to PJs,
maybe sport photographers, the D1v maybe for some
portrait work, for insurance companies, real estate
companies, etc. For these people digital is better and
offers already good enough quality without having to
upgrade all the time. All others probably should stick
with 'analog'. At least for the next few years...
