Be sure to activate center-weighted or spot-metering. The EOS-3 and other
matrix evaluating metering may be trying to outsmart you. That is, they try
to guess whether you are looking at a white wall, grey wall, or black wall
by other cues in the picture. So even something small in a corner of the
frame, depending on which sensor it hits, can trip one of the matrix
algorithms into second-guessing you.
That being said, almost all of my EOS-3 shots on Velvia/Provia have been
100% spot on, except for the ones using 550ex fill flash, which I'm still
trying to get a feel for. I've seen no indication of underexposure and have
done +/-1/3 stop AEB's to make sure that the +0 bracket is really ideally
metered (it is). Once you've done a couple of 1/3 step AEBs, you realize
just how sensitive slide film is to proper exposures.
Somewhere on the web is a page with the serial numbers of affected EOS-3
units. From your serial number, you can tell when and where you unit was
made. I forgot where that page is, unfortunately, perhaps someone else can
post it?
