The french magazine Chasseur d'Image have made a test, and a comparison with
the EF 100-400 L IS USM lenses.
The IS is sharper than the VR lens. 3 stars (optical performances) for the
Nikon and 4 stars for the Canon.
The minimum focal distance is 2,3m for the Nikon and 1,8 for the Canon. The
VR lacks the AFS and it's really slow (still slow with F100)
The positive points for the VR is that the VR is activated a fraction of a
second before the shutter is pressed. Energy is less spent by this system.
The VR detects vertical panning by himself and switch on the VR panning mode
!
As a lot of people have been (in the past) interested by the confrontation
of the IS & VR systems, I have wrotte these few words about the informations
published by Chasseur d'Images - december 2000.
