Hmm, it seems to be at the same level of fragility as the other consumer 
zooms, 28-105USM, 100-300USM are the ones I can compare it with. Mine 
fell to the floor from about 2 feet last week due to my own dumbness :-(
After that, the focusing ring was jammed. I applied some force and 
something seemed to come back to working with a very audible plasticky
sound. Now it works as smooth and well as new again. So I wouldn't tell
it rugged, but it at least seems to have survived the drop.

During the same trip, my 50/1.4 dropped out of my backpack onto concrete
from about 1.5 feet. No damage whatsoever, maybe thanks to the hood I 
had attached reversed. Another reason for buying lens hoods for ones 
lenses ;-).
