The 100-300USM is well spoken of, a true ring USM, and the build quality
is far superior to the 75-300, whether it is USM, IS or none of the
above.  I'm going to rent that lens this wknd. I rented the 100-400IS
last month, and found it to be fantastic.  I want to see if the
difference in price can be justified to my wife, and holder of the purse
strings.  If you can afford $1600 or so, the 100-400IS USM is a great
lens.
