Hi John,

Try the following url which explains the Canon date
coding system:

The number you've quoted certainly seems like a serial
number, not a date code.  From memory not all of my EF
lenses have a date code.  I also once had an eos body
which did not have a date code in the film chamber (an
EOS 1000F), so it would seem that Canon does not
strictly follow this coding method.....
