This is a tough one. A good wildlife lens will not likely make a very good
general-purpose lens. Personally, in your position I would probably be looking
at the 300/4L and the 1.4x extender (and possibly the 2x as well). OTOH, given
the kind of trip you appear to be taking and the amount of money you are
probably spending on it, I think I would look into buying a 70-200/4L and
*renting* a Big White--either a 400/2.8L or one of the 500Ls, and perhaps take
along a 1.4x extender as well. Horses for courses, as they say.
