I had exactly the same problem with my three year old EOS 50E one month ago!
I thought the battery department is the problem since I heard that this is a known
problem with this type of camera. It wasn�t. The guy at the Canon rep center told me
that the shutter unit was the reason. When you see the "dead battery" symbol then the
shutter can�t close. Another (partial) push on the shutter release forces the shutter
to close (kind of reset). So the shutter unit had to be replaced or adjusted. He had
no explanation how this could happen. It seemed to be a very unusal problem.
Anyway, I paid $90 and it works fine now.
