You may have just lost the click stops. The spring behind the ball that
create the stops can break. The problem with this is that when it does, a
piece of the spring can lodge in the mechanism, causing the dial to shear
away from the control beneath; this is what originally happened to mine. I
replaced the plastic pins with metal screws and left out the spring and
ball.
