The adapter has to push the pin of the lens to stop it down. There are two
sorts of M42-adapters, the ones that push the pin when you screw in the
lens, and the ones that don't - the adapter from Hama for example.
On some M42-lenses there is a switch to change between automatic and manual
mode. If your lens has such a switch, you should try the "M" or manual
position, and you don't need another adapter.
You also could try to block the pin. I have a 200/3.5 M42 lens for use on a
bellows, and the pin pushes a metal ring just beneath the mount. I pressed
down the pin and stuck a piece of rubber between the ring and the mount. If
you dare to open the lens you could disable the pin completely (the
mechanism is spring-loaded), but with a new lens I would opt for using the
right M42-adapter.
