One other thing to consider when looking at off brand lenses is how well it
works with any given camera model. I have used a few off brand lenses,
including the earlier all metal Tokina 20-35 F/3.5-4.5 (which the 19-35
replaced) and while the optical performance was quite good (with distortion
that is similiar to the Canon 20-35USM,) I found the lens would not lock in
focus correctly. I find that's a problem with many other off brand lenses
including Sigma and Tamron lenses. I have had similiar problems with off
brand lenses on Nikon AF bodies, so I am pretty confident that it has
something to do with the lenses. I always let the combo "lock-in" focus and
tap the shutter once more to fine tune the focus.
I would very much recommend the 20-35 EF USM over the Tokina 19-35. Yes
it's 2X the price, but it's really quite a good performer for the price. Or
as they say, great value for the money.
