Hi Bob,

I usually don't have a problem with flare even with a filter attached, but
I'm seldom out in the bright sunlight when taking close-ups. I find the
lighting less harsh in the shade. The lighting is sometimes somewhat bluish
in the shade, however, so I will often use an 81A or B to warm up the whites
in flowers a bit. When photgraphing insects, I usually don't use a filter
at all, and my lighting comes from a small 200e flash on a bracket to the
side.

As far as step up rings, I have one for my 50mm F1.8 Mk II and Sigma 24mm
F2.8, but will sometimes skip a shot or take it without a filter because I'm
too lazy to go through the steps of putting on the step up ring and then
swapping the filter. Taking multiple shots where you have to change the
step-up and filter, find the right lens cap (carry two sizes in case you
want to leave the filter in-place) can be a little bit of a pain (need lots
of pockets). Anyway, not trying to challenge anyone's technique, just
wanted to say that I use filters on my macro (a Sigma 105mm, F2.8).
Cheers, JD

And of course, I'm only refering to my limited experience with macro work
(less than a year), and I do appreciate your comments.
