With the 135mm "lens" on the 480EG, its got the highest guide number (68
meters) of any Canon speedlite.  Without the "lens", the 550EX has a
higher guide number (55 meters vs. 48).  Note that Canon rates their
speedlites for indoor use - actual guide numbers (outdoors) are typically
1 stop less (70%).

The general consensus is that the 480EG is overpriced (it requires *at
least* the Transistor Pack-E for power) - that's $500 for the 480EG and
$130 for the TP-E.  That puts you close to the 550EX+550EX range and
beyond the 550EX+420EX price.  Also consider a Metz or Sunpak flash.
