1.- Would FEL help here?

3.- Can you use FEL on a self-timer or remote-released shot?
for (1) I think FEL would help. You take the measure (pre-flash) and
then you shot anytime withing the 16secs that the FEL is active (Answer
2, following the manual of the 50E).
I've used FEL in combination with the RC-1, being the only limitation
that you have to stay in the time frame of the 16'secs. It's easy to
notica what's going on if you set the RC-1 for 2-sec delay (and mirror
lock). While FEL is active, the mirror will go up and the flash will
burst just at the curtain operation (I've always 2nd curtain sync). If
you take more than 16 secs between "FEL-ing" and triggering the shutter,
then a pre-flash will come right when the mirror goes up and the *real*
flash will burst with the curtain. You can't miss it :-)
What I don't know for sure is what would happen when using Bulb, FEL and
leaving the curtain open more that 16 secs (Actually this test can also
be done with Tv 30' and the 'matching' dark scene).
Just to say it one more time, FEL is wonderFEL! :-) :-) (it's more
accurate that 'normal' E-TTL operation at short ranges (macro)). In my
opinion is a nice way to have manual flash control is a quick and smart
fashion.
Have a nice weekend !!!
Gerard.
