Could this be the standby feature kicking in on the 380 EX?
What I love best about this little flash is, after I think 1 minute the
flash stops charging, light goes off, and it stays on standby. Then as soon
as you touch the shutter button, it's back again ready to go. This really
saves batteries.
Sorry if it's something else, the way you explained it made me think maybe
this is what's going on.
