I've never used one, but I've seen situations where they could have
helped. But for me, it's still a bit of a hassle to work with the lens
(for my style of shooting... not a pro whos shooting architecture or
landscapes for living)... so I am not thinking about getting a graduate ND
filter to add to my worries 8-)

I would probably do it so that first, I'd meter the scene, then shift,
then set the ND filter and then bracket the exposure... oh, and use
exposure compensation (well I use M mode, but the same thing applies)!
Even without the graduate ND filter, the exposure you get from metering
directly through the lens (i.e. without shift) may not be the corect one
for the shifted situation. So I think that in any case, you need to use
exposure compensation and bracketing.
So do soe experiments and then later on just bracket. :-)
