and want to seriously upgrade.

Robb,
For PJ work its typically wide and normal lenses. Hence, the 50mm F1.8, and
perhaps a 24mm F2.8. If you prefer zooms, my choice would be the Tamron
20-40mm lens
since you have a very wide 20 to near normal 40mm.
