Dimitri, Like you, I use step-up rings on all my non 77mm lenses
because of a large inventory of 77mm filters. Most lens hoods can not
be attached to the lens because the hood will not fit over the 77mm
opening. This is how I solved the above problem.
First, I use a "Tiffen" 77mm rubber screw-in hood on most lenses. I
specify "Tiffen" because none of the other brands I tried are very
stable. The Tiffen hood is thicker and harder than others and the
threads seem to fit better to the filters. Most of the other brands
were apt to fall off the lens if you "bumped" into anything, including
your hand. Don't waste your time. Buy Tiffen rubber hoods. If on the
wider angle lenses you see dark corners caused by the lens hood, just
fold it back. I would say this single hood is effective on lenses from
28mm to 100mm.
I use a B+W (not B&H) telephoto aluminum hood on everything from 90mm
out. This hood stays attached to my 90mm T/S lens via a 58-77mm step-up
ring. I think I paid about $50. at a local dealer. It's double
threaded. You can screw another 77mm filter to the front of the hood.
It's black and of very high quality.
If none of the above work for you, use your hand or your hat to block
the sun from the front of your lens.
I purchased enough 77mm lens caps to fit on all my stepped up lenses.
