FWIW, I have purchased the 28-80 3.5-5.6 USM, 100-300 4.5-5.6 USM,
and 50 1.8 II within the last two years. From memory, the serial
numbers on these are located near the lens mount, "inside" around the
back element, but in *very* faint lettering (lightly engraved into
the black plastic on the 28-80 and 50 I think). I know Australian
Customs had difficuilty confirming the serial numbers when I
declared the stuff on the way out once, it's *that* faint in some
light.
