Chris,
I think you missed the advantage of the lens hood arrangement on the
28-70/2.8. On a wide angle, your hood needs to be of much less coverage
otherwise it will vignette your photos. But when you zoom toward the
70mm end, you can have much more coverage without vignetting.
Canon's design here is ingenious because you never have a lack of
coverage on the lens hood, unlike most other lenses in this range which
still have a 28mm hood coverage even when the lens hood when zoomed to
70mm or 80mm. That is the type of design that makes the lens hood "next
to useless" much of the time. Canon's design is excellent.
