    Ben, we just finished talking about zooms of this range. (to death I
hope)
You seem like an amateur type not in the market for an expensive, heavy
lens, so I will recommend either the EF 75-300 or the EF 100-300. Both are
sharp lenses for the money. The EF 100-300 is a bit better handling, front
doesn't rotate, etc. I have the EF75-300 personally, and find it to be a
good lens in any case. Get the USM version if you can, it will focus faster.
Neither of these lenses are fast, but using high speed film you will find
them very useful, and the price very reasonable. I'd recomment avoiding the
3rd party lenses at this point, since you might want to trade up later, the
Canon lenses will hold their value better.
