Hi Ben,
This seems to be a popular topic, but you haven't given enough information
to narrow the discussion (especially price range). If you take a reductionist
view of the choice of X-200/210/300/400/500mm zooms, you could probably
summarize the market by the following features.
1) Price
2) Compatibility
3) Optical properties (max aperture, special glass, etc)
4) Focussing properties (minimum focus, USM, FTM, push-pull, etc)
5) Zoom Range (e.g. 35-350, 50-500, or 100-400, 200-400, or 80-200, etc)
6) Image Stabilizer (Mode 1, Mode 2, Tripod Capable)
7) Mechanical Properties (Weight, Filter size, Tripod mount ring, etc)
In general, the more money you spend, the better the lens you can buy.
Are you looking for a salesman's price comparison? Or an optical comparison?
Or a filter-size comparison? What purpose do you want to use your lens?
e.g. surveillance photography, wildlife, close-up, astrophotography, etc.
Merry Christmas
Julian Loke
P.S. You could summarize WJM's Rules in three sentences:
1 )We're here to have fun by discussing EOS photo equipment.
2) If it stops being fun (i.e. flame war, advertising, garbled e-mail text),
or it's not about EOS equipment (e.g. scanners, Windows, sunglasses),
then it's OFF TOPIC.
3) Anything else is ON TOPIC
